I got my start with a local printing company in the early 1980s who employed a wonderful gal with a mile of patience. She taught me the basics, which back then was no easy task - we were using a DOS based system to create boxes, text in various styles and sizes, leading, rules and more. This was back when picas and points were the norm, not the exception. Windows wasn't invented yet - you couldn't see on the screen what anything looked like - it had to be printed on film and then run through a developer, rinsed and hung to dry (talk about trial and error!) Then it could be trimmed and waxed for paste-up. I know what you're thinking - it all sounds so archaic now - but back then it worked.
I moved on to a Maine newspaper where I spent several years typesetting ads for two dailies - but by this time, we had programs like Multi-Ad Creator and Quark. You could now see exactly what you were doing and knew what the final output looked like without printing on film first. I certainly know what production and deadlines are all about.
Although I no longer work for the dailies - I have kept up with creative services because it is something I love. I now work with Adobe products like InDesign, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash. With 25 years of experience behind me - I can now be more creative than ever before, yet disciplined to meet production deadlines.
